Wire fraud & security

Before you wire, verify.

A message can look familiar and still be fraudulent. Establish trusted contact information before the closing and use it to confirm payment instructions.

Use a number you established independently.

Call your trusted closing contact using a previously verified number. Do not rely on a number, link or reply address in an unexpected message to verify that same message.

Pause when instructions change.

Confirm the recipient and account details independently before sending funds. Treat urgency or a last-minute change as a reason to stop and verify.

If money may have gone to the wrong account.

Contact your bank or wire-transfer provider immediately and ask about a wire recall. Report the suspected fraud to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at IC3.gov. Recovery is not guaranteed.

Keep private information out of general inquiries.

Do not put bank details, Social Security numbers, identification documents or wire instructions into website forms. Ask your closing team for the approved channel.
